Engineer - Electrical

Electrical Engineer (EE):
Full time
Location: Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth, VA

The EE is responsible for the preparation of detailed electrical engineering analysis, calculations and designs, development of plans using AutoCAD, specifications and cost estimates, in support of in-house and A/E design bid build and design build projects, for a wide range of projects.

Typical projects include: power generation systems, unit substations, MV overhead and underground distribution systems, lighting systems and related energy-saving type controls, power systems, lightning and grounding systems, cathodic protection, photovoltaic and wind power systems, communication and AV systems, security systems, and other systems of major complexity for use by Naval Shore Facilities.

Typical facilities include: multi-story offices and quarters, hospitals, electrical generation and distribution, towers, airfields, aircraft overhaul facilities, industrial waste treatment plants, piers, photovoltaic farms, training facilities and a very wide diversification of other structures and facilities.
Requirements:
• Minimum of 5 years of Electrical systems design
• Must be able to pass all drug and background screening to have access to military installations.
• Electrical Engineering: Bachelor Degree in an ABET accredited Electrical Engineering or Engineering Technology program
• Working knowledge and experience with Electrical Design software (e.g. SKM, AGi32)

It is preferred but not required that candidates have professional registration/licensing for their disciplines as well as be a USGBC LEED accredited professional.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Evaluates electrical systems, products, components, and applications by designing and conducting research of products; applying knowledge of electricity and materials.
• Confirms system’s and components’ capabilities.
• Develops electrical designs by studying customer requirements.
• Assures product quality by designing compatible electrical systems.
• Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

EE shall have experience in design and engineering for facility design and construction. Have working level knowledge of the DoD Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC), Building Code Analysis, Microsoft Office Software Suite, AutoCAD, SpecsIntact, and cost estimating software for the construction of facilities from design documentation (prefer experience with SKM and AGI software).

EE shall assist in the preparation of project and contract modification cost estimates, working with available cost estimation tools as well as independent research and utilizing professional experience.
EE shall have experience coordinating with all engineering/design disciplines, programming, scheduling, planning, design and construction related matters from “cradle-to-grave,” and required actions to coordinate delivery of individual projects, packages and complexes.

EE shall have experience coordinating with customers and sponsor commands, integrating requirements into the overall project execution, and reporting project status to Project Manager. EE will be responsible for executing project schedules within budgets.

EE shall review plans, specifications, cost estimates, project documents and reports submitted by A&E firms for technical adequacy, completeness, functional design, sound engineering practice, compliance with EE and DOD criteria and all applicable codes. EE shall support the Government as the final authority on scope compliance and directs the A&E firm to correct deficiencies unless challenged by the contract A&E of record, and ensure that the final submittals are complete and satisfactory.

EE shall initiate field trips to project site during scoping, design and construction. Interfaces with customer and other interested parties providing expert consultation and gathering pertinent information required to complete project.

EE shall inspect existing conditions of a site and of a facility to gather information.

EE shall conduct Reviews for Government Approval: EE’s materials, submittals, shop drawings, and schedules to ensure they conform to the requirements of the contract documents and when necessary, visits construction sites to provide advice to the Government on problems arising during construction.
