Roadway Design Engineer - Culpeper District
 

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is seeking a Roadway Design Engineer, position #22834, for its Culpeper District. The incumbent will conceptualize and design roadway features on transportation projects using design/analysis software and tools. May serve as project manager to include responsibility for preparing quantities and estimates, developing schedules, and monitoring project activities. Ability to prepare and present engineering data and provide technical guidance on roadway design issues from the preliminary engineering process through construction required. The position salary range: $52,779 – $84,062.

Job Requirements
Education, training, experience:

Minimum Requirements: Knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices related to geometric roadway design. Skill in the use of design and analysis software and drawing tools to develop simple and complex roadway designs. Ability to perform detailed engineering calculations. Ability to estimate quantities and cost of materials/equipment/labor. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing to positively represent the agency to internal and external individuals and groups. Ability to work effectively with diverse groups and to build and maintain effective networks and relationships with others also required.

Preferred Requirements: BS in Civil Engineering or related field. Experience in roadway design and preparation of construction plans and related documents. Experience using Microstation and Geopak software. Virginia Professional Engineers License or EIT Certification preferred but not required.

Special Requirements: Valid Driver’s License required. Fingerprint based background check, references, employment history and DMV records will be verified prior to employment.

Completion of Conflict of Interest Training and Statement of Economic Interest required at the time of employment and annually thereafter as a condition of continued employment.

This position is designated as essential and as such, all duties associated with this position are required during emergency situations, which may include, but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response, and emergency operations. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required.
