2009 Big Beam Contest Winners Announced
November 30, 2009

At a recent meeting at Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) headquarters in Chicago, Ill., the Student Education Judging Committee selected the winners of the Engineering Student Design Award, also known as the Big Beam Contest.

PCI’s Student Education Committee organizes the Big Beam Contest, which has been sponsored by Sika Corp. for the past 9 years. The objective is for teams of students to fabricate and test a precast, prestressed concrete beam with the help of local precast concrete producer members. Prizes are awarded for the most efficient design, highest load capacity, best report, and other categories.

Listed among the winners was a team from “Virginia Tech“, which placed sixth overall. The Virginia Tech faculty advisor was Professor Benjamin Dymond. The student team consisted of William Collins, Bernie Kassner, Andy Hardyniec, and Matthew Swenty. The team’s PCI producer was The Shockey Precast Group, located in Fredericksburg, Va., with company representative Nicholas Comforter.
