2011 CIRT-ACE Mentor Design Competition
April 19, 2011

Led by Tony Maida of Jacobs Engineering, the Washington Lee High School ACE (Architecture, Construction, and Engineering) Mentor team from Arlington, Va. received 1st Runner Up in the preliminary round of the national 2011 Construction Industry Roundtable (CIRT)-ACE Mentor Design Competition.

A record 37 entries (representing 21 of 57 ACE affiliates) from across the country competed in this fifth year of the CIRT-ACE competition’s existence. The theme of the competition is to promote innovation in the design and construction community in order to improve the quality of life, while also understanding issues and challenges unique to the industry. This year’s design challenges instructed teams to create one of the following designs as if they were responding to an RFP: the ideal school, a retirement village for military families or a health clinic. Judging was conducted by a committee of top CEOs and principals in the design and construction industry. Aspects evaluated included site and context; constructability; strategies for sustainability; quality of furniture, fixtures and equipment; and surrounding landscape.

The design competition is a collaboration between CIRT, which represents the senior executives of many of the country’s leading architecture, engineering and construction firms, and the ACE Mentor Program of America, which was created to address the growing need for skilled professionals in the architecture, construction and engineering industries.
