American Society of Safety Engineers’ Foundation (ASSEF) Receives $35,000 Grant
January 20, 2011

The American Society of Safety Engineers’ Foundation (ASSEF) recently received a $35,000 grant from The UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS. The donation will fund six $5,250 scholarships, along with an opportunity for recipients to attend ASSE’s annual Professional Development Conference and Exposition, Safety 2011, to be held June 12-15, 2011, in Chicago, Ill., at McCormick Place for ASSE’s 100th Anniversary celebration.

According to ASSEF, three of the six scholarships will be awarded under new the Gerry Eaker Memorial Scholarship fund, sponsored by UPS, which honors the memory of Gerry Eaker, a long-time UPS manager. These three scholarships will be awarded to junior or senior year students working toward a degree in safety, health and the environment (SH&E). The remaining three scholarships will be awarded through the UPS diversity scholarship program. These scholarships are awarded to junior or senior year students from a minority background pursuing an undergraduate degree in SH&E.

Scholarship applicants must be full-time students pursuing a B.S. in occupational safety and health or a related field, be student members of ASSE, have a GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, be in good academic standing, and be recommended by a safety faculty member. Students are invited to apply annually for scholarships through the ASSE Foundation and can apply from September through December 1 of each year.

The ASSE Foundation, established by and in partnership with the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), generates funding and provides resources for scholarship, applied research, academic accreditation, and related academic initiatives in order to advance the safety, health and environmental profession.
