An Award-winning Project
June 1, 2009

The River Oaks wastewater collection project in Fairfax County, Virginia, was recently recognized with the local American Public Works Association (APWA) Project of the Year Award. As the project engineer, Dewberry provided planning through the design and construction stages of the project.

The APWA award was established to recognize excellent work in the Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Maryland chapter region whose mission is to enhance the abilities of customers to meet the challenges of providing public works services.

Working with the Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services, Dewberry provided a feasibility study, sewerage system design, and construction engineering services to houses in the community experiencing septic tank failures which posed a potential health hazard and environmental threat to the nearby Potomac River. The design included a combination of shallow low pressure sewers with individual house grinder pumps, and deep gravity sewers construction within existing streets to meet the neighborhood’s needs and preserve the trees. Multiple field inspections were conducted to minimize the construction impact.
