ASFE Publications Warn About Mold
July 23, 2004

ASFE/The Best People on Earth has revised Important Information about This Geotechnical Engineering Proposal and Important Information about Your Geotechnical Engineering Report, two highly popular documents many of the group’s Member Firms include as client advisory inserts in their proposals and reports, respectively.

ASFE/The Best People on Earth, established in 1969 as the Association of Soil and Foundation Engineers, is a not-for-profit trade association comprising geoprofessional, environmental, and civil engineering firms. ASFE has developed insert sheets and many other tools for a variety of disciplines. The latest versions of the two geotechnical engineering insert sheets reflect concerns about mold. They warn that mold prevention requires special services. The new language (taken from the report document) states, in part, “Diverse strategies can be applied during building design, construction, operation, and maintenance to prevent significant amounts of mold from growing on indoor surfaces. . . . [T]he geotechnical engineer in charge of this project is not a mold prevention consultant; none of the services performed in connection with the geotechnical engineer’s study were designed or conducted for the purpose of mold prevention. Proper implementation of the recommendations conveyed in this report will not of itself be sufficient to prevent mold from growing in or on the structure involved.”

ASFE Member Firms can use the insert sheets “as is,” as report or proposal complements or inserts. Others can use the inserts’ language in the development of their own unique documents. The new ASFE documents are available to nonmember firms at a cost of $50 each. They can be ordered from ASFE’s website www.asfe.org or by contacting ASFE directly by telephone (301/565-2733) or e-mail info@asfe.org.

ASFE develops programs, services, and materials its members apply to enhance their business practices. Members are professional firms that offer “earth engineering” and related applied science services; e.g., services involving geotechnical, environmental, and civil engineering; geology, biology, ecology, and archeology; infrastructure security; brownfields revitalization; construction and program management; and construction materials engineering and testing. Member firms’ technical activities must be under the full-time control of an individual who is legally and/or ethically bound to hold paramount public health, safety, and welfare.
