ASSE Foundation Announces New Student Scholarships
September 30, 2008

The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Foundation recently announced the availability of thousands of dollars in scholarships for the 2009 academic year, including eight new awards. The deadline for submitting applications is December 1st, 2008.

All available scholarships are for students pursuing a degree in occupational safety and health, safety engineering, safety management, occupational health nursing, occupational medicine, risk management, ergonomics, industrial hygiene, fire safety, environmental safety, environmental health or other safety-related fields. Scholarships range from general criteria to regional-based, diversity and specific areas of study within safety.

Applicants must be student members of ASSE, unless otherwise specified in the scholarship qualifications. Undergraduates must have a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 out of 4.0 and have completed at least 60 semester hours towards their degree and be enrolled in 12 or more semester hours. Graduates must have a GPA of at least 3.5 out of 4.0, be enrolled in nine or more semester hours and have an overall undergraduate GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0. There are also awards available for part-time undergraduate students, enrolled in less than 12 semester hours, and part-time graduate students, enrolled in less than nine semester hours. Students need only submit one application to be considered for the various scholarships. In addition, in an effort to allow more students to be eligible for awards, the graduation requirement has moved up to May 2009 or later, allowing graduating seniors to apply for scholarships. In addition, students are now eligible to receive subsequent awards from year to year. Nearly $123,000 in scholarships will be distributed.
