November 22, 2017

The Virginia Transportation Construction Alliance (VTCA) has awarded the Route 7 Truck Climbing Lane project in Loudoun County with its VTCA Transportation Engineering Award for projects larger than $10 million.

Dewberry, as part of a design-build team with Shirley Contracting Company, completed the design and construction of the Route 7 westbound truck climbing lane, Route 7 access modifications, interchange modifications at West Market Street, multi-lane roundabouts at Route 9, and realignment and grade separation of the Washington & Old Dominion (W&OD) Trail for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).

Other features of the project included retaining walls and multiple barriers along Route 7; guardrail upgrades and shoulder improvements along westbound and eastbound Route 7; pavement building and resurfacing of westbound Route 7; roundabout signing and marking, roadway lighting, and landscaping on Route 9; and drainage facility improvements and installations on Route 7 and Route 9.

In addition to the multi-modal transportation improvements, the project incorporated various architectural and landscape treatments to blend the updates into the surrounding area, as well as provide additional screening to adjacent properties. The project involved the improvement of multiple modes of travel and the coordination and outreach efforts with numerous agencies and the public.

Projects were judged on multiple criteria, including aesthetics/context-sensitive solutions, community needs, cost effectiveness, schedule, and technology. Dewberry was recognized at the 2017 VTCA-VDOT Consultant Forum in Richmond, Virginia.
