Gloucester County is recruiting for an energetic, collaborative, strategic thinker who can articulate a clear vision on the current and future direction of the county’s growth and development within the Public Works department. Under minimal supervision, this leadership position performs highly responsible management and professional engineering work. The Director of Public Works reports to the Deputy County Administrator and is a member of the leadership team.

The preferred candidate will supervise professional and clerical support staff delegating supervisory authority as appropriate for subdepartments including: Engineering, Buildings and Grounds /Mosquito Control, and Environmental Programs. Provides direct management of Engineering staff and operations. Will supervise the
design and construction of all County properties, including buildings, parks, grounds, solid waste facilities, public safety radio communication systems, and major water/sewer utilities. Work involves administration of revenues, planning, developing and implementing proposals and programs to maintain and expand services in accordance with needs of the County.

Applicants must possess a bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in civil engineering, or a related field and 6 to 9 years of progressively responsible management experience dealing with capital project delivery and land development. Must be registered as a Professional Engineer (PE) by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Recognition as a Construction Documents Technologist (CDT) by the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) preferred.

Possession of a valid driver’s license; possess and maintain a driving record that meets established Gloucester County Driving Standards.

Hiring Salary Range: $77,826 – $100,000 DOQ
