DOE Announces Expansion and Renovation Project
September 3, 2010

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced the beginning of a $73.2 million expansion and renovation project at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility in Newport News, Virginia. The project will include construction of the Technology and Engineering Development Facility as well as the modernization of a test lab built in the 1960s to house NASA’s Space Radiation Effects Laboratory. The renovation of the test laboratory is expected to be completed by the end of 2012.

DOE envisions the new Technology and Engineering Development Facility will enable scientists and engineers to focus on areas of nuclear physics, accelerator science, applied nuclear science and technology, and advanced superconducting radio frequency instrumentation. Construction of the new facility is expected to be completed by the end of 2011.
