DOE Announces Publication of 2017 Average Energy Costs
May 30, 2017

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has issued its representative 2017 average unit costs for residential electricity, natural gas, propane, and No. 2 heating oil. As published in the Federal Register, these changes will take effect on June 5, 2017.

The Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) EnergyGuide labeling regulations were revised in 2013 to specify the use of the DOE 2013 average unit energy costs. The FTC labeling rules, which are on a five-year revision cycle, indicate that the average unit energy costs in Appendix K will be amended in 2017. If that amendment is made, these 2017 average unit energy costs will be referenced. However, the 2017 average unit energy costs shall not be used to estimate cost of operation on FTC labels until the FTC issues a final rule amending its labelling rules to specify the use of these costs.
