DOE Issues Final Rule for CAC and HP Energy Conservation Standards
January 18, 2017

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has issued a Federal Register direct final rule pertaining to energy conservation standards for central air conditioners and heat pumps (CAC/HP). In this final rule, DOE is adopting amended energy conservation standards for these products consistent with the term sheet developed during the 2015-2016 Appliance Standards and Rulemaking Federal Advisory Committee (ASRAC working group negotiations). The amended energy conservation standards as measured under the new test procedure, Appendix M1, and will be expressed in the new metrics (SEER2, HSPF2, EER2). The effective date of rule is May 8, 2017, unless DOE receives adverse comments by April 26, 2017. If no adverse comments are received, compliance with the new minimum efficiency standards will be required effective January 1, 2023.
