EPA Joins U-W Industrial Refrigeration Consortium
August 17, 2007

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced it will join the Industrial Refrigeration Consortium (IRC). Formally established in 2001, the Industrial Refrigeration Consortium (IRC) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is advancing the state-of-the-art industrial refrigeration by conducting research, technology transfer and technical assistance for organizations involved with industrial refrigeration. Partner organizations involved in the IRC include food companies, ammonia producers, energy providers, and regulatory agencies. “Involvement in the IRC will help us more effectively administer our programs that encompass industrial refrigeration systems that use ammonia” says EPA chemical engineer Armando Santiago. Mr. Santiago also noted “the IRC is a key organization that will allow us to strengthen our understanding of the technical issues facing industrial refrigeration end-users”.

EPA joins another regulatory agency already participating in the IRC – the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). “Participation by these regulatory agencies opens up a twoway
flow of information with industry”, says Dr. Douglas Reindl, IRC Director. “Companies benefit from an improved understanding of regulatory policies. At the same time, the regulators learn more about the practical realities of operating safe and effective industrial refrigeration systems.”

More information on the IRC is available from its website at
