Explore Computer Science Weekend For High School Girls Scheduled
March 8, 2017

In the tradition of Sweet Briar College’s successful Explore Engineering and Explore Environmental Science weekend camps for high school girls, the College will start an Explore Computer Science session this spring. Open to sophomore, junior and senior girls from high schools anywhere in the U.S., the event will take place April 7-8, 2017.

The focus of the weekend will be the intersection of computer science and biology — computational biology. Computer science is essential for analyzing and understanding information about life. Computer science plays a role in everything from the analysis of protein shapes to the study of gene networks to predicting the behavior of biological systems.

Working in teams, participants will work with programs written in popular programming languages Python and NetLogo to explore biological applications and simulations. All activities will provide practical experience. At the end of the weekend session, students will showcase their projects to family and friends.

No prior programming background is required.

Students will stay in Sweet Briar’s historic residence halls with engineering student mentors. The $35 cost includes room and board, meals, snacks, supplies and a T-shirt.

Online registration is at sbc.edu/computer-science. Registration is due by March 22 for highest priority. Space is limited.
