I-66 Widening Design-Build Project Receives Excellence in Infrastructure Award
May 31, 2017

The Heavy Construction Contractors Association (HCCA) has recognized the I-66 widening design-build project in Virginia with its Excellence in Infrastructure Award for a project over $15 million. This award is given by HCCA to highlight the value individual projects bring to communities.

As part of a design-build contract to the Virginia Department of Transportation, Dewberry completed the design for the $54.8 million widening of I-66 from four to eight lanes, including one high-occupancy vehicle lane in each direction, between Gainesville and Haymarket. In an effort to reduce right-of-way impacts, widening was completed primarily within the median of the existing travel lanes. Additionally, more than 13,000 linear feet of noise barriers were installed.

Two local road overpass bridges were demolished and reconstructed (Old Carolina Road and Catharpin Road), and the approach roadways were improved to provide pedestrian accommodations on the completed bridges and local roadway network. Construction was completed in August 2016. The firm was recognized on April 19, 2017, at the HCCA Safety and Infrastructure Awards.
