Leadership Development Program Graduates Recognized
April 18, 2011

According to information made available from Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC), NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic Commanding Officer Capt. Mark Libonate recognized five employees April 6th for graduating from the organization’s inaugural Leadership Development Program (LDP).

Erick Cooper, John Springfield, Steven White, Todd Bober and Jeffrey Rhodes were NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic’s students among the 47 NAVFAC-wide civilian employees who represented the first graduating cadre of the program that was revised in 2009 in order to provide more thorough and progressive learning opportunities for the candidates.

“The LDP is the answer to the question, ‘What do I need to do to become a leader?’” remarked Cooper, an engineer with the Capital Improvements Business Line. “From the indoctrination session to the exit interview, the compressed plan of developmental courses, activities, and mentoring in the LDP allowed me to gain a broader perspective of the NAVFAC organization.”

The LDP represents one facet of NAVFAC’s overall commitment to leadership development. It provides for a competitive selection process to ensure a pool of qualified applicants exists for future leadership positions within the organization. This two year developmental program incorporates rigorous formal training, Lean Six Sigma projects, rotational assignments across the corporation, and exposure to corporate events and strategic planning.

“The program can be challenging to complete given individual workload requirements but is well worth the effort and I feel fortunate to have been a participant,” said Todd Bober, NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic environmental engineer of Public Works Department Pennsylvania. “The need for leadership development programs like this will increase as NAVFAC evolves in support of its current Strategic Plan.”

The next cadre of LDP candidates will be submitting their graduation packages this December.
