Moffatt & Nichol Celebrates 70 Years Of Service
August 6, 2015

Global infrastructure advisor Moffatt & Nichol recently celebrated 70 years of service. With revenues of $134 million in 2014 and more than 600 staff members worldwide, Moffatt & Nichol remains an industry leader, continuing to expand services to clients around the globe.

In the early 1940s, engineers John Moffatt and Frank Nichol moved to Southern California to assist with the war effort. Their employer, Guy F. Atkinson Construction, had tasked them with designing and building several key U.S. Navy installations to secure the nation’s Pacific coast, all while learning the ins and outs of port facilities. As World War II came to a close, the two decided to strike out on their own, and on July 20, 1945 established Moffatt & Nichol. Moffatt & Nichol quickly became known for its maritime- and transportation-related work, expanding its engineering services to Southern California’s growing commercial waterfront.

Moffatt & Nichol would go on to open offices in North America, South America, Europe and the Pacific Rim, while expanding its primary practice areas to support the larger demands of the goods movement industry.

Moffatt & Nichol expanded to the Virginia marketplace in 1996 with the opening of its Richmond office. Initially focused on the transportation practice, the firm established strong, lasting relationships with the Virginia Department of Transportation, Department of Rail and Public Transportation, and Virginia Port Authority that have resulted in continuing work with these clients today. In 2000, Moffatt & Nichol opened an office in Norfolk to better support and serve the Virginia Port Authority and has since expanded to include the Department of Defense and other state and local government agencies.

Moffatt & Nichol’s experience also includes previous and current on-call engineering and planning contracts with local governments, including the Cities of Norfolk, Newport News, Richmond, Suffolk, and Virginia Beach, and Isle of Wight and Dinwiddie County. Today, the firm’s Virginia offices provide transportation, marine terminal, coastal engineering, and water resources planning and design services as well as inspection and rehabilitation of bridges and waterfront structures to numerous federal, state, local government, and private clients.

Moffatt & Nichol operates 30 offices worldwide, providing clients with customized services in marine terminals; waterfronts and marinas; coasts, water, and the environment; transportation; oil and gas marine facilities; and inspection and rehabilitation.
