Motor Company Renovation Achieves LEED Platinum Certification
September 23, 2010

Spectrum Design and The Town of Blacksburg announce that The Blacksburg Motor Company has achieved LEED® Platinum Certification, the highest LEED rating achievable, and is the first in Southwest Virginia to receive this certification. The project is also one of the few building projects in the region to combine LEED with historic preservation.

The completed $2.6 million renovation of the historic Blacksburg Motor Company was announced on August 7th, 2009. Formerly home to the Doc Roberts tire store and service center, and Blacksburg Motors, the 84-year-old building was transformed into a Municipal Service Annex and offices for Blacksburg’s Department of Planning and Building and Department of Engineering and GIS.

The Blacksburg Motor Company project features rain gardens, rain barrels, permeable concrete, an ultra high-efficiency geothermal heating and cooling system, extensive natural day-lighting, and low-water use plumbing systems. Low maintenance and recycled materials were also utilized throughout the construction process.
