Nature Conservancy Announces Wetland Restoration
March 4, 2011

The Nature Conservancy, in partnership with The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and private landowners, has announced the planned restoration of more than 400 acres of Eastern Shore wetlands and habitat. The project will take place over the next two years.

The restoration effort will include planting 3,500 wax myrtle shrubs at the Mutton Hunk Fen Natural Area Preserve and filling drainage ditches originally used to drain wetlands for agricultural and other land uses. The project goal is to increase habitat for migratory birds as well as improve the quality of surface water and groundwater the conservancy says.
