New Prison Location Still in Grayson County
May 7, 2007

The Virginia Department of Corrections announced Friday that a new medium-security prison will in all likelihood still be located in Grayson County, but not at a previously proposed location.

A site near the small community of Cox Chapel had previously been considered but faced opposition from local residents concerned the prison would diminish the area’s rural character. Instead, the new prison is to be located on a site closer to Route 58.

While officials are still considering other sites for the new prison, according to Mr. Gene Johnson, state department of corrections director, “it is clear to the department that the [Grayson] site provides greater advantages over all other sites.”
