New Update To Materials Standards Now Available
April 29, 2020

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), a nonprofit, nonpartisan association representing highway and transportation departments in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, has announced the release of the first of three 2020 updates to its Standard Specifications for Transportation Materials and Methods of Sampling and Testing, and AASHTO Provisional Standards, 40th Edition (the “Materials Standards). These standards contain specifications, test methods, and provisional standards commonly used in the construction of highway facilities.

The Materials Standards are updated three times per year—in April, June, and July—with updates grouped by subject areas. The April 2020 Update includes 8 new and 18 revised standards, and revises the sections on Hydraulic Cement and Lime; Fresh Concrete; Hardened Concrete; Pavement Measurement; Bridge and Pavement Preservation; and Quality Assurance and Environmental. The June 2020 Update will revise the sections on General Manufactured Materials, including Concrete Drainage Structures, Flexible and Metallic Pipe, Markings and Coatings, and Safety Devices. The July 2020 Update will revise the sections on Geotechnical, and Bituminous Materials and Mixtures.

“As we release this first 2020 update, we are pleased to also announce the availability of several new formats and features that have been made to the Materials Standards,” noted Casey Soneira, Program Manager for Engineering, and staff liaison to the AASHTO Committee on Materials and Pavements. “We are, once again, making the standards available in paperback, and our new enhanced PDF format offers customers enhanced accessibility, an improved user experience, and a variety of features not available with our previous web-based format.”

Copies of the new Materials Standards are available at the AASHTO Store, and searching by the publication’s item code, HM-40.
