President Bush Honors Young Scientists and Engineers
May 20, 2004

President Bush recently honored 57 of the nation’s most promising young scientists and engineers with 2002 Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). John H. Marburger III, Science Advisor to the President and Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy, presented the awards at a White House ceremony to 20 National Science Foundation (NSF) supported researchers and 37 other scientists and engineers representing programs sponsored by eight other federal departments and agencies. NSF’s nominees for these presidential awards are drawn from junior faculty members who have received grants from NSF’s Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) program.

President Bush also recently announced nine individuals and eight institutions to receive the 2003 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM). Each award includes a $10,000 grant for continued mentoring work. Each year the president recognizes the people and institutions that have provided broad opportunities for participation by women, minorities and people with disabilities in science, mathematics and engineering in elementary, secondary, undergraduate and graduate education. Recipients of this year’s individual awards include a range of professionals from biology and chemical engineering to computer science and medicine.
