Regulatory Burden Study Issued
January 23, 2017

The National Association of Manufacturers has released a new in-depth study detailing manufacturers’ regulatory burden. In addition to a narrative of an average manufacturer’s experience with regulation, the study also reveals some startling facts:

• Manufacturers’ operations are subject to 297,696 restrictions from federal regulations.
• 87 percent of manufacturers surveyed say that if compliance costs were reduced permanently and significantly, they would invest the savings on hiring, increased salaries and wages, more R&D or capital replacement. In other words, jobs could be created.
• 94 percent of manufacturers surveyed say the regulatory burden has gotten higher in the past five years, with 72 percent saying “significantly higher.”
