SBIR Competitive Checklist Workshop
May 19, 2009

The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program and the Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program provide federal resarch grants of $100K-$750K to meet the mission needs of 11 participating federal agencies. Over $2.2B is available in this program from agencies such as DoD, National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Dept. of Energy, EPA, USDA, NASA, Dept. of Transportation, Dept. of Homeland Security, and Dept. of Commerce. The Center for Innovative Technology (CIT), a state funded non-profit in Virginia who’s mission is to support the Commonwealth’s technology community, will offer several low cost SBIR/STTR workshops. Find out how your technology firm can participate in this valuable program that has been described as the most advantageous funding program for small business in America at the CIT website. Over 5,000 new projects are awarded each year.

This session reviews a special “checklist” covering the key competitive areas of your pending SBIR and STTR proposal, allowing you to consider making appropriate modifications to make your proposal stand out and be more competitive. Topics covered include: Have you adequately defined your opportunity? Have you appropriately related the issues to the agency’s needs? Has the project/research plan been written to meet the reviewer’s needs and designed to take advantage of reviewer habits? Have you provided a sufficiently deep technical discussion? Will your document convince the reviewer of intent and ability to commercialize? Have you showcased your resources to best advantage? Is your commercialization plan adequate? Have you discussed the “Value Chain” sufficiently? A brief look at the Summary statement. Commercialization basics and necessities. A special take-home “Competitive Checklist” will also be provided.

The workshop will be held on June 2nd at Williams Mullen, Two James Center, 1021 East Cary St., Richmond, VA 23219, 17th Floor. Parking is available under the building. The SBIR/STTR Competitive Checklist Review will be held from 10:00AM – 12:30PM. A word from the Location Sponsor, Williams Mullen, will take place from 12:30PM – 12:40PM. From 12:40PM – 1:30PM there will be Summary Statement Tips and lunch – Every proposal needs one, but what makes a good summary statement and how can it help ensure that your proposal gets read! A light lunch will be served during this presentation. Finally, networking will take place from 1:30PM – 2:00PM. Workshop cost is $45 per person. Contact Robert Brooke, Director, Federal Funding Programs, Center for Innovative Technology, or 703-689-3080 to learn more, or visit CIT Events to register.
