Site For Intermodal Rail Yard Announced
August 20, 2008

The Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation has announced that after a two-year study Elliston, a rural Southwest Virginia community located in Montgomery County, has been chosen as the site for a new Norfolk Southern intermodal rail shipping yard. According to company officials, the yard will employ about 12 people, but the economic impact is expected to create up to 2,900 jobs in the region.

Intermodal shipping is more efficient and therefore cost effective, say industry officials, because it puts goods in containers that can easily be transferred among trains, ships and trucks. Upon completion, the project is anticipated to cut shipping time from Virginia’s ports to Midwest destinations by as much as a day and a half. The intermodal yard, during its first 15 years of operation, is expected to eliminate 1.9 million trucks from the highways.
