Standards Society Calls For Papers
July 14, 2006

According to the Standards Engineering Society, there is still time to write your entry for the 2006 World Standards Day Paper Competition. Recognizing the vital role that partnerships play in the development and use of standards, the theme for this year’s competition is “Standards Build Partnerships.”

The standards system in the United States is complex, decentralized, and based on effective collaboration between the private and public sectors, between standards users and standards developers, and between consumers and industry – partnerships.

Paper competition winners will be announced and given their awards at the US celebration of World Standards Day, which will be held this year on October 11 at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, D.C.

Cash prizes are awarded for the best three papers submitted. The first place winner will receive a plaque and $2,500. Second and third place winners will receive $1,000 and $500, respectively, along with a certificate. In addition, the winning papers will be published in the SES journal, Standards Engineering, with the first place paper also to be published by the American National Standards Institute.

Administered by the Standards Engineering Society (SES), on behalf of the US World Standards Day 2006 Planning Committee, the competition is open to any individual in the private sector, government, or academia, including employees of standards developing organizations. Entrants must be working in a US-based facility and co-authorship is permitted.

All paper contest submissions must be received with an official entry form by midnight September 1, 2006, by the SES Executive Director, 13340 SW 96th Avenue, Miami, Florida, 33176. For details on the winners’ recognition, cash awards, judging, and rules, go to www.ses-standards.org and click on WSD Paper Competition 2006.

Established in 1947, the Standards Engineering Society is a not-for-profit professional membership society whose mission is to promote the use of standards and to enhance the knowledge of standardization. SES is the member body for Canada and the United States in the International Federation of Standards Users (IFAN) and is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). SES members are primarily involved in the application and use of company, government, national, regional, and international standards.
