Study To Use Microsimulation
March 11, 2005

According to recent press reports, communities located adjacent to I-81 in Virginia are concerned that the implementation of tolls along stretches of the interstate will create local congestion. Short of actually placing tolls on the interstate, the best way to determine diversions is to use microsimulation technology to observe travel patterns. PBS&J is a member of the VDOT I-81 First Tier EIS consultant team and is using AIMSUN2, with dynamic route assignment, to test the impacts of tolls on local roadways. With AIMSUN2, engineers can observe vehicles traverse across the computer screen, as well as diversions and the traffic impacts.
