Team Awarded Grant To Address Need For STEM Teachers
September 20, 2018

A multidisciplinary team of Christopher Newport University (CNU) faculty has been awarded a $1.1 million grant by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to help address the critical need for effective K-12 science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) teachers across the U.S.

According to information, the project, part of the NSF Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program, aims to recruit and train 24 STEM majors at CNU to become highly qualified teachers who are prepared for the challenges of teaching in high-need schools. Participants will receive $15,000 scholarships for up to two years and have multiple opportunities for paid internships.

“We intend to train the future teachers to use research on student thinking and learning and reflections on their experiences to develop and refine effective student-centered lessons,” says Dr. George Kuster, assistant professor of mathematics and principal investigator on the project. “We anticipate that this training will also encourage participants to continually seek to improve their instructional practices.”

Led by Kuster, the team includes Dr. Lisa Webb, of the Department of Molecular Biology and Chemistry; Dr. Jean Filetti, director of the Master of Arts in Teaching Program; and Dr. Sara Lenhart, also of CNU’s Math Department.
