Supervisory Team Leader - Facilities Planning/Construction

The University of Virginia’s Department of Facilities Planning and Construction, Health System Division seeks an experienced and dynamic Supervisory Team Leader to lead the Owner’s team, providing project management during the construction of the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems for the University Hospital Expansion. This position will play an integral role in facilitating the communication and coordination process with Health System Physical Plant personnel throughout construction of this facility. The successful candidate will bring experience in the design, construction and maintenance of large, complex healthcare facilities, and will have the opportunity to utilize their unique skill set and deep expertise in a leadership capacity, working alongside University and Health System partners, to ensure successful management and delivery of this portion of the project.

The Supervisory Team Leader will be a collaborative leader as well as a successful strategic project manager, who balances big picture thinking with the ability to pragmatically drive work forward. An effective relationship builder, s/he will be experienced at resolving conflicts and building a coalition of key stakeholders across Facilities Management, Facilities Planning and Construction, Health System Physical Plant, as well as the project architects, Perkins and Will, and the construction company, Skanska. The incumbent will be decisive and able to make and implement timely decisions while addressing risks and opportunities. Following the completion of the project, additional opportunities will be available within Facilities Planning and Construction or Health System Physical Plant.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in the following areas:

Operations Leadership: Setting strategic and operational direction; leading, influencing, and driving decisions; delivering against multiple short and long term priorities; leading diverse teams of direct and indirect team members; managing performance and behaviors; effectively collaborating, communicating, and engaging constituencies

Process Excellence: Leading and managing cross-functional project teams in improving service processes; assessing the effectiveness of the project approach and recommending real-time adjustments accordingly; engaging stakeholder constituencies to assure their needs and perspectives are central to project decisions

Construction Management: Effectively managing scope, schedule, and budget; supporting the planning and construction by developing and reviewing architectural and engineering documents and cost estimates; managing and implementing design engineering, construction, and MEP for a large-scale, complex project

• Bachelor’s degree required; Mechanical Engineering, Building Construction, or equivalent field preferred
• Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in management of design, construction, and renovation of educational, healthcare and/or institutional facilities
• High degree of technical proficiency and ability to understand and communicate complex matters quickly and efficiently
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; excellent interpersonal communication skills to foster inclusiveness and collaborations.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
LEED accredited professional preferred.

The University Hospital Expansion:
The University Hospital Expansion is a multi-year project and construction on the enabling work is in progress. The project is a $394 million addition and renovation to University Hospital that will provide for the expansion the Emergency Department, the consolidation and expansion of the interventional platform, and the development of a six story inpatient bed tower. The project consists of 440,000 square feet of new construction and 90,000 square feet of renovation.
