Concrete contractors with exemplary safety records were recognized as part of the American Society of Concrete Contractors (ASCC), St. Louis, Mo., 2006 Safety Awards Program, at the association’s Annual Conference, September 14, in Milwaukee, Wisc.
Awards were presented to general and specialty contractors in four categories. Awards are based on a company’s incident rate for 2005. A nationally recognized safety measurement, the incident rate represents the number of lost workday cases from the OSHA 200 log, times 200,000, divided by the number of work hours in a calendar year.
General contractors that won the Best Safety Achievement Award for general contractors with the lowest incident rate were Webcor Builders, San Mateo, Calif. (over 250,000 work hours); Prus Construction Co., Cincinnati, Ohio (100,000 to 250,000 work hours); and Oakley Construction, Inc., Hermitage, Tenn. (less than 100,000 work hours). Specialty contractors winning the Best Safety Achievement Award were S. B. Ballard Const. Co., Virginia Beach, Va. (over 250,000 work hours); Walbridge Concrete Services, Detroit, Mich. (100,000 to 250,000 work hours); and Garland Concrete, Garland, Tex. (less than 100,000 work hours).
41 contractors received awards for zero lost time due to accidents and 35 contractors were recognized for having lowered their incident rate from the previous year. 102 contractors received certificates of recognition for achieving an incident rate below the national average. The average is based on the most recent information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Injury and Illness Division.
