DOE Issues Final Determination For Standard 90.1-2016
December 19, 2019

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has issued a Final Determination that new residential buildings meeting the requirements of the 2018 edition of the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) will save energy over the 2015 edition. Specifically, new buildings are expected to result in national site energy savings of 1.68 percent, national source energy savings of 1.91 percent, and national energy cost savings of approximately 1.97 percent of residential building energy consumption over the 2015 edition. By December 10, 2021, each state is required to certify that it has reviewed and updated the provisions of its residential building code regarding energy efficiency. State certifications for Standard 90.1-2016 must be submitted by February 27, 2020. Details and DOE’s technical analysis are available here.
