Scanned Data Wrap Process Receives Patent

Geomagic®, a worldwide software and services firm headquartered in Research Triangle Park, NC, has announced that the firm has been issued a U.S. patent for its process of automatically generating 3D digital models from scanned point-cloud data. The wrap process now protected under U.S. patent 7,023,432 is used throughout the Geomagic product line.

The company holds four other patents, including awards for morphing technology, color scan data processing, and automatic polygon-to-NURBS conversion, and has several additional patent applications pending.

The patented Geomagic wrap process is used widely in dental, hearing and other custom manufacturing applications where simplicity, automation and throughput are critical to successfully transitioning from manual to digital processes. The company cites four major advantages of the patented process:

* It handles any type of scanned data, providing a universal interface to all 3D data capture devices. * Point clouds exceeding 100 million points can be processed significantly faster than before using memory-efficient algorithms, while maintaining accuracy. * It provides fully automatic 3D geometry processing, quickly transforming points into detailed polygon models. * The resulting shape can be easily edited without losing the integrity of geometric and topological properties.
